Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
