The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
