Morgan Rogers' Golden Spell Fuels Villa's Surprising Title Charge

A mere two months ago when Morgan Rogers found himself on the Stadium of Light pitch, seeming perplexed while his coach berated him over not reading a through-ball. During that period, as the club endured a six-game winless run, it wasn't clear if his performances were an indicator or the source for the team's more general malaise.

“Following Rogers' second strike… Emery discarded his jacket, extended his arms, and let out a triumphant roar.”

The Sideline Explosion of Triumph

This weekend, though, the touchline reaction was entirely much more joyous. When Rogers swept in his second strike to restore the lead for Villa, the boss tore off his coat, opened his arms and shouted in triumph. The Birmingham club marched on to a tenth straight victory , after failing to win any of their first six matches, are somehow a mere three points off the leaders Arsenal.

Is Aston Villa Genuine Hopefuls?

That’s a rather hard proposition to resolve. History, the perceived status of the club, indicates otherwise. Furthermore, they have not been completely commanding during this run, despite the fact the wins have accumulated.

Per the data, in only two games has the side registered an expected goals figure more than 0.5 greater than the opposition. For a side which has put together ten consecutive victories, Villa seem weirdly vulnerable – but right now the margins are going in their favour.

The Winning Formula

The prevailing tactic seems to be to trade blows with rivals before hoping their talisman to save the day with two clinical strikes. This occurred away to Leeds, it occurred against West Ham, and once more when facing the Red Devils.

His opener came from an exquisite effort, curled precisely inside the goal frame from the corner of the box. For his second acted as a slightly less clean iteration of goal number one as he seized on a setup by his strike partner.

“Much like Robben with his left, Rogers’ right foot has become a known threat that remains brutally unstoppable, regardless of anticipation.”

A Formidable Weapon

Can It Last?

Reason suggests otherwise. In the recent win, the opponents had more efforts and more shots on target. They have secured their last eight victories by the narrowest of margins. They have allowed goals in nearly all of those fixtures.

Regression to the mean may well be the most significant challenge they must confront in the near future. Rogers, surely, will not continue to thrashing the ball into the net's top corner week in, week out.

A Case for Belief

Perhaps there is an alternative path where, rather than outcomes regressing to match displays, performances begin to trend towards results. Key players may yet return to peak condition.

  • The main striker may begin to adding to his goal tally.
  • Jadon Sancho could transform into the player he resembled during his peak.
  • The defensive duo are due to come back from the treatment room, strengthening a sometimes shaky defence.

Maybe within that lies the possibility of a genuine bid, but they surely cannot keep relying on a single individual.

Savoring the Moment

However, this was unforeseen. It seemed improbable Aston Villa would be in a Champions League place in December. And most definitely two months ago, nobody thought Rogers as the year closed would be spearheading a championship pursuit while establishing himself as an essential England player.

The current run must be cherished for the very reason that it feels so unlikely. When the hero faced the Villa faithful after the match leading the celebrations, he seemed to be relishing every moment. A feeling he has rightly earned. Such periods are uncommon in the sport and must be appreciated.
